From
Aesop to Zinkoff --- Read, Read, Read!
*This session features a close look at a collection of favorite children’s
books and the history behind them, including a behind-the-scenes view of
the publishing process for picture books and middle grade novels. (Thanks
to Jerry Spinelli for the use of Zinkoff, the main character in his
middle grade novel, Loser.)
(For teachers, writers, staff, and older elementary students)
Rookie Magic----Starting Early with Young Readers
*Carol Murray’s Rookie Readers, Hurry Up! and Jenny’s
Socks, will offer a springboard to lively oral reading with kindergarten
through second graders, emphasizing the fact that
“We learn by doing.” (John Dewey)
ABC Art Riddles (Get Smart-----Do Art!)
*This picture book, by Carol Murray, was published in the spring of 2005.
It will be used in this session, along with other illustrated non-fiction
picture books, to encourage students to experiment with both pictures and
words.
(For students in 2nd through 4th grades).
The Scoop on Children’s Poetry---
(What on Earth is Onomatopoeia-- and Who Cares?)
*This session will take a light-hearted look at children’s poetry.
A workshop will be developed individually, based on school, writer’s
groups, staff, or student needs. It could include browsing time to look
at poetry books, oral reading of selected poems, a look at the use of wordplay
and poetic devices, and the actual writing of poems.
It will be suitable for older elementary students, teachers, and writers.
Allotted time will depend on what is desired. This session can last half
a day, all day or an hour....
Hold that Computer! (Brush up your writing skills)
*ABC Writing Riddles will serve as a fun starting point to talk
about grammar and handwritten essays (punctuation, organization, spelling
rules, penmanship). Get started early in preparation for essay sections
on the new SAT and ACT tests.
(For older elementary students, teachers, and writers).
Poetry Power---Using Poetry in the Classroom
*This session starts by making use of Carol’s thirteen poems included
in the two-volume series, Phonics through Poetry. Other ways to
use poems in the classroom for student learning and enjoyment will be explored.
(Best for grades K through 4 and teachers)
